Quebec’s Court of Appeal has ordered Air Canada to pay 10 million Canadian dollars in damages for deceptive pricing practices during ticket sales.
The court ruled that the airline violated consumer protection laws and described its assumption that those laws didn’t apply to it as “serious ignorance and negligence.”
This decision overturned a previous ruling that dismissed the case due to lack of proven harm. The lawsuit, launched 15 years ago, alleged that passengers were charged an additional 124 CAD at checkout, leading to complaints over a lack of pricing transparency.
The court concluded that consumers’ right to be informed had been violated and ordered refunds along with compensation. Air Canada has not yet issued a statement regarding the ruling.
